This museum is unique as much for its locale as for its subject. Dedicated to the 1960 Winter Olympics that were hosted by Squaw Valley USA in Lake Tahoe, the Olympic Museum is housed in Squaw's High Camp. The camp, built on a plateau high on the ski slopes of the resort, features the museum, a skating rink and pool and restaurants, and is accessible by the lifts or by cable car. Featuring exhibits that depict the history of Tahoe City, the Gatekeeper's Museum boasts a large collection of historic photographs, oral histories, newspapers and other historic artifacts. Native Americans, the logging industry and the tourism industry are just a few of the exhibits found at this museum. The Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum is also located within the Gatekeeper's Museum and features a world-class collection of over 800 utilitarian and fine baskets from 85 tribes throughout California and western North America.
